About Us

The history of Tanzania Golf union starts on 7th July 1923, when the first attempt to form a Golf Union in East Africa, took place at a meeting convened by the late Mr. A. C. Tannahill and held at Nairobi Golf Club [now Royal Nairobi Golf Club]. Thirteen (13) representatives from Golf Clubs in Kenya, Tanganyika and Uganda were present in the meeting. The late Major J. D. Leonard took the Chair and the late Mr. A. C. Tannahill acted as Honorary Secretary. A formation committee was appointed which included the two names mentioned above as well as the late Mr. W. T. Shapley and the late Mr. F. S. Dunn. The Union was named “The Golf Union of East Africa” and it is from this original venture that the present Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) owes its origin. The Golf Union of East Africa ceased to function on an East African basis, a decision taken in a meeting of the Golf Captains of East Africa held on 29th December 1928 at the Nairobi Golf Club. It is not on record how golf continued to be managed in Tanganyika but in 1950 golf clubs amalgamated to form Tanganyika Golf Union, [now Tanzania Golf Union].
